Upper Owens, PVR, Jan 2012

This would be our first trip up to fish the upper owens in the winter. It was cold. The NOAA forcast said it would be 7* that night and I believe them. We arrived at about 2AM saturday morning to this.

Ten minutes later and the fog rolled away. Much clearer, still cold. We slept in the truck this night. We let it idle with the heater on for about two hours while we cleared out a little room in the cooler.

The next morning was a beauty indeed. Still damn cold though. The waders came in very handy here. We do not normally employ the waders on our trips. If you fish the Upper Owens during winter make sure you have them.

I felt like I had thrown every pitch in my bullpen by the time I finally got some action from a nice plump 12" Rainbow on a bead head wooley bugger. This day proved to be more of a dues paying exercise then a highly successful bendo fest. This was the only fish for either of us on the Upper Owens that day.

That night we drove down to PVR and stayed just below the damn. We hit the damn the next morning before the long drive home. We got about an hour and a half in before heading home. It was a glassy morning, with almost no other fisherman.

The only way to catch these fish was with a poker face.

Mini jigs were the go to today. We started out throwing our normal Kastmasters, Super Dupers, Buoyants, etc, to only a couple chasers. Switched over to some 1/32 mini jugs and started lighting them up. This was the most steady action I have had fishing mini jigs to date. I now carry a full assortment.
